Setting the Record Straight on Probate | Thomas Sciacca

{Read in 8 minutes} As a trusts and estates attorney, a lot of times people ask me, “Do I need to avoid probate?” Frequently, people have seen a recent television program with a TV personality advising them to execute Revocable Trusts or people telling them horror stories about what the probate process has done to them, but very infrequently do people actually understand what probate is. Let me tell you a little bit about what it is so that you can make a decision about what is appropriate for you and your loved ones.

Apps to Make Social Media Less Time-Consuming | Vikram Rajan

{4:05 minutes to read} It’s hard to keep up with all of the emails you get from clients and other VIPs. It’s also hard to keep up with the marketing outreach you have to do. It’s equally hard to find time to keep up with all the social media networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter in your day-to-day work.

phoneBlogger.net can help you with the blogging. But there are also phone apps that you can use to keep up with others and market yourself in an authentic way.

3 Ways to Increase Your Twitter Followers | Vikram Rajan

{4:09 minutes to read} Twitter is best for anyone who wants to be seen on a stage. This includes the obvious people who are usually on stage, including performers, entertainers, and celebrities, but also government officials and politicians, authors, and subject matter experts. If you are looking for more speaking engagements and more opportunities to be behind a microphone and literally, if not figuratively, on a stage, then Twitter is the right platform for you.

Does Your Marketing Actually Make You Money? | Vikram Rajan

We are pleased to share this article by guest author, Rod Bristol.

OKAY! You went to your annual conference and heard the highly paid, highly profane keynote speaker rail at you for 90 minutes about how you need to run Facebook ads! You got convicted! You then went through the process of creating the ad, measuring the ad for reach, amplification, content, and engagement trends; figuring out if anyone likes it, comments on it, or actually shares it with others. But how do you know if you’re actually MAKING ANY MONEY from the ad?

What’s the Right Length for Your Blog? | Vikram Rajan

{3:07 minutes to read} There really isn’t one perfect length for blog articles. But given people’s short attention spans these days, you should make sure that readers remain interested from beginning to end. If you’re using your blog as a marketing vehicle, keep your articles short and simple.

Don’t try to exhaust the whole topic in any one article:

No blog article can do complete justice to any topic. Books can easily be written on the simplest ideas.

4+ Surprising Benefits of Testimonials

4+ Surprising Benefits of Testimonials | Vikram Rajan

When we obtain a testimonial, we benefit in 4 ways:

1. When our clients say it in their own words, we’re able to fully understand the value that we’re providing. Sometimes testimonials on websites and brochures don’t sound “authentic” because they are not in the client’s actual words.

2. When clients express or vocalize the value that they have experienced, they are reiterating it to themselves too—essentially reaffirming their loyalty. If a competing vendor or practitioner comes knocking on their door, literally or figuratively, hopefully, their testimonial has already resold them.

3 Ways to Measure Results

3 Ways to Measure Results | Vikram Rajan

There’s an old adage: “Only 20% of marketing works; 80% is a waste. We just don’t know which 80%!” Even worse, the 80% is a changing set: What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow, and so forth. Unfortunately, much of marketing is trial & error and A/B testing. Still, I find clients who have “tried nothing and are all out of ideas” (a Simpsons quote; email me for the episode). How can we improve the odds if we don’t measure what we’re doing? A leading indicator of positive results is our automated, systematic, and repeated actions.

7 Traits of Marketing Maestros | Vikram Rajan

{2:20 minutes to read} I’ve only had one real boss: my father. He’s a deep thinker & very learned—inspirational to many people. He taught me pretty much everything I know in terms of business.

I’d like to share one of the best lessons he taught me, which still rings true on a daily basis: 7 core values around which he based his company. They are known by the acronym MAESTRO (he was from the AT&T days of “TLA”—Three Letter Acronyms—and was a fan of acronyms himself).

Redesigning Your Website? I Told You So! Part 1 | Vikram Rajan

{Read in 4:20 minutes} One of my favorite blog article ideas on blogbrainstormer.com is in the client Q&A section. It’s often dubbed the “Anti-Success Story” or the “I-Told-You-So Story.” As an advisor to others, you may have had an opportunity to tell your clients not to do something, but for whatever reason, they went ahead and did it, leaving you to clean up the mess. While that can lead to greater billing and, in some ways,

3 Reasons to Keep Marketing During Your Busy Season
avatar

Authored by , re: Business Development, on .

{Read in 4:30 minutes} Very often, during the barrage of business, there isn’t as much time or energy for marketing. Yet, the busy season doesn’t literally happen all at once: It happens sometimes over the course of 3 or 4 months, which means someone in that 2nd or 3rd month is very often being affected by the people who “pulled the trigger” during the 1st month.

For example, some clients wait until April to contact their accountant to file their taxes. Others, who may be ready and are much more organized, approach their tax

Asking for Testimonials is AWKWARD! Not with These 6 Tricks… | Vikram Rajan

{5:00 minutes to read} How often are you asking clients to give testimonials? When they thank you for the great service you’ve given them, how can you leverage that for more word-of-mouth referrals?

Considering the ubiquity of social media sites like Yelp, Avvo, G+, Fb and LinkedIn Endorsements, it’s natural to question “the Truthiness” of online reviews. The good news is that there are alternative ways to obtain, grow and share testimonials. And they need not only be from clients. For example, testimonials can be garnered from:

Professional Online Networking Beyond Pop Social Media | Vikram Rajan

{4 minutes to read} What do you think about when you hear the term “social media”? The field of online networking goes beyond what we traditionally think of as social media, which puts the emphasis on the social, on the fun & on the non-professional aspects of our life. But there’s a very healthy & growing world of professional online networking.

Most of these professional networks thrive on quick status updates that resemble tweets, a knowledge base for the public, and peer relations.

Are My Blog & Website Mobile-Friendly | Vikram Rajan

{2:00 minutes to read} One of our clients emailed me a question, “Vik, I was wondering if you think my main website is mobile-friendly?” This is how I answered my client’s question:

1) Your main website is not mobile-friendly, Google offers this tool & solutions (which are more than a lay person can handle):

Google Mobile-Friendly Test “What can I do to fix it?” she asked.

2) Your main website can become mobile-friendly by turning it into a WordPress website, and incorporating your blog.

What’s Better than Know, Like, Trust | Vikram Rajan

{1:08 minutes to read} In order to be recommended, you must be remembered. “Know, Like, and Trust” has become an often bandied-about sales & marketing term. Productive relationships go through 3 phases:

  1. Knowing one another.
  2. Liking one another.
  3. And trusting in each other’s expertise & character: Each side must deliver on promises.
But, what really triggers referrals? Plenty of people know, like and even trust you. We know, like and probably trust plenty of people. Whom do you recommend?

Only 6 Lawyers Attended My Seminar! 4 Happy Lessons | Vikram Rajan

{5:00 minutes to read} Back in October 2014, I presented a seminar series for the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA). While only 6 lawyers attended the 1st workshop, there were at least 4 happy lessons for me to learn, and perhaps for others to follow.

The series was modeled after the ones I presented at the NYC Bar Association in the Spring:

I’m Not Going to Sit Next to You & Other Networking Tips | Vikram Rajan

When you go to a conference or a networking event, do you find yourself congregating with your partners, colleagues, associates & friends? Stop… and get to work.

I was just at the Michigan State Bar Association annual conference: I am on the team helping to onboard their members onto their new lawyer portal, like its own LinkedIn for Lawyers. It’s being powered by ZeekBeek.com. As I walked into one of the luncheons with the CEO of ZeekBeek, I turned to him and said, “Sorry, I’m not going to sit next to you.”

We had discussed the strategy beforehand so it wasn't offensive: “Divide & conquer” is a harsh way of putting it, but it gets the point across.

phoneBlogging: The Newest Oldest Profession? | Vikram Rajan

phoneBlogging : gerund \ˈfōn-ˌblägiŋ\ : the process of transforming a telephone-based audio recording into an edited article, optimized for website blogs. Ok, fine, we made that up: But did we really?

Telephones have been around since 1876. Audio recordings may even pre-date Edison’s 1878 invention. While blogs began around 1999, journals of personal & professional musings have been around for centuries. With the dawn of human culture, tribal leaders & monks shared their wisdom by transforming oral traditions into written forms. phoneBlogging is simply our newest interpretation.

  2. Who clicks on which link
  3. Who forwards your email
  4. And at what time/day they did any of the above.

It’s All About the Follow-Through: Marketing, as with Tennis & Golf | Vikram Rajan

In April 2014, I was selected to be the (youngest ever?) next “Counselor-in-training” with SCORE, the business counseling non-profit funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration. As soon as 1 of the NYC SCORE Counselors read my bio, she recommended me to speak with 2 of her clients, both involved in legal services. I met with one of them today – not as an official SCORE appointment – but as a casual conversation. 1 of the key knowledge nuggets I imparted: “As with tennis or golf, it’s all about the follow-through.” Have you taken any tennis or golf lessons? I have. I’ve learned that it’s not good enough to strike the ball square. More important is the full swing, including its follow-through.

If I were to just speak “off the cuff,” I would have some difficulty keeping my thoughts organized – that’s why I have a bulleted list in front of me with my main points.

I was inspired to phoneBlog today after I received an email from one of my editors named Dan.

Want to write a book? BoB it quickly… | Vikram Rajan

Have you been procrastinating on a great book idea? Have you gotten around to outlining its chapters, its main points? That’s the first step. Then, there’s a simple way to have the book practically write itself. Authoring a book brands you an expert. TV, radio, print media & blog interviews – and speaking invitations – most often go to authors of books. It’s also the easiest way to distinguish your practice & encourage more word-of-mouth referrals. You probably know all this. It may be why you've been wanting to write a book.
