Your Mental Health: Time for a Checkup? | Danielle Bissett

{3:40 minutes to read} If you had a broken leg, would you ever not go to the doctor to get it examined? If your tooth cracks and you are in pain, would you ever not make an appointment to see the dentist? So, if you are struggling emotionally, why are you not looking for a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist to help?

Feeling Sad or Depressed?

Authored by , re: MENTAL HEALTH, Therapy, on .

{3:24 minutes to read} Let me ask you a question: “What do you think makes you feel a certain way?”

Was your answer: Situations? Events? Circumstances? If so, what if I told you you’re not quite right?

Think about it. If it was a situation that made a person feel a certain way, wouldn’t we all feel the same after that situation? For example, imagine you and 99 other people are sitting in a classroom and you all received a “C.” Would everyone feel the same way about it?

If you answered no, you are right.

  • A quarter of the class might be ecstatic saying, “Finally, I passed a test in this class; this is the best day ever!”
  • Another quarter of the class might be saying, “Wow, a C. This is horrible. I am such a failure.”
  • Other classmates could think, “Okay, a C; it is what it is.”

Why Does My Child Misbehave? Part 2

Authored by , re: Family, MENTAL HEALTH, Therapy, on .

If you read my previous blog post you learned that children do not misbehave without reason! I discussed one of the fundamental concepts of why children misbehave, which is positive reinforcement. This blog will discuss negative reinforcement, which is another fundamental concept.

Negative reinforcement is when a certain stimulus is removed after a particular behavior is exhibited. Sometimes, without realizing it, we increase the likelihood of inappropriate behavior occurring by removing/avoiding a negative consequence. Let me explain!

Why Does My Child Misbehave?

I have heard many parents say, “I just don’t know why my child is not listening. I have tried everything, but nothing works.” Sound familiar?

Children do not misbehave without reason! There are two fundamental concepts that influence a child’s negative behavior. This blog will concentrate on positive reinforcement. Next time your child acts-out, look at what happened right before their inappropriate behavior. This is known as the antecedent. An antecedent is a stimulus that cues a person to perform a learned behavior. Anytime we reinforce a behavior (good or bad) we are increasing the likelihood it will happen again.

Is Your Child Being Bullied?

Authored by , re: MENTAL HEALTH, Miscellaneous, on .

Although the peak of bullying is in middle school, don’t assume that’s the only age it happens. Bullying can happen as young as preschool and carry over to the adult workforce.

Bullying comes in many shapes and sizes:
  • Physical
  • Verbal
  • Cyberbullying
  • Sexual bullying
  • Prejudicial bullying
  • Relational aggression

Your child can be a victim of any number of them.
