Conquering the Impossible: Muhammad Ali & LeBron James | Curtis Battles

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” – Muhammad Ali I was working on the Grand Central Redevelopment Project in 1998 when I had the distinct pleasure and honor of meeting the late Muhammad Ali, one of my long-time heroes.

Lessons from Harvard: Learn to Shift Your Perspective (in Business & in Life!) | Curtis Battles

{4:45 minutes to read} Recently, I accompanied my daughter on a visit to Harvard University. We joined a group of her peers headed up to Boston to meet Harvard Professor Mahzarin Banaji. Professor Banaji has done some well-known research into unconscious bias on how people view each other and how their impressions affect their reactions to the world. Recently, she has authored Blindspot, which is described as “a metaphor to capture that portion of the mind that houses hidden biases.”

{2:50 minutes to read} I’ve known about TED Talks for some time, but I’ve seldom gone out of my way to explore them on a regular basis. A TED Talk is “a video created from a presentation at the main TED (technology, entertainment, design) Conference or one of its many satellite events around the world. TED talks are limited to 18 minutes but may be on any topic.” Given the short time limit, these lectures reveal a lot of insightful, innovative information. Folks are often left feeling inspired and energized.

Is Multitasking Making You Unproductive? | Curtis Battles

{3:00 minutes to read} In my business and day-to-day personal routine, I strive to be both efficient and thorough. In order to do this, I’ve learned it is best to set specific goals every morning—and to stick to those assignments. The temptation to multitask looms often, but even a 10-item “to do” list is too overwhelming and can be detrimental. A recent article from Fast Company introduced the concept that tasks requiring deep thought are only possible if you are able to focus—without distraction—on those tasks.Furthermore, research from Georgetown University and the University of London indicate that multitasking can lead to a drop in IQ.

{3:00 minutes to read] In a recent Inc.com article, entitled “Use the 10-3-2-1-0 formula to get more done”, an interesting concept is discussed: How you start your day depends on how you finish the day before. Often, our productivity is dependent upon what time we get up and the routines we follow to get our day rolling. In order to focus on managing your life to reach your day’s goals and to be more effective and efficient, this article suggests using the 10-3-2-1-0 formula within a specific time frame before retiring for the night:

SS United States Will Sail Again! | Curtis Battles

{2:50 minutes to read] The SS United States, a 60-year-old ship that holds the Blue Riband speed record between the US and England, has been slowly rusting away in a Philadelphia dry dock. In recent years, this national treasure, a once-majestic ocean liner famous in the ’50s and ’60s, was at the point where it was destined to be sold for scrap because of the $60,000-per-month cost of upkeep. Victory at last: On February 4, 2016, a press conference was held to announce that Crystal Cruises had stepped in and saved a piece of American history.

{3:00 minutes to read} At the end of November, I attended a community forum organized by a national education-reform organization called StriveTogether. Strive Together has numerous programs in 32 states, with 65 community partnerships formed and over 9,750 organizations united in trying to find solutions for the educational system in their area. Their approach as defined on their website: “StriveTogether brings proven expertise, effective resources and a nationally-recognized collective impact approach that enables communities to create local education ecosystems to support children and youth from cradle to career.”

Secrets of Success—It Starts with the Morning Routine | Curtis Battles

{3:00 minutes to read} I find that rising before the rest of the house, even if it’s at 5:00 am, helps you ease into the day without all the disruptions that life can bring. In a recent article in Inc. Magazine, there was a list of the 8-morning rituals of the most successful people, which caused me to reflect on my own morning routine. The 8 rituals are listed as:

  • Wake up early;
  • Decide and review what to do for the day;
  • Work out;
  • Have a healthful breakfast;
  • Maintain a journal;
  • Meditate;
  • Finish difficult tasks with focused work; and
  • Outlearn the competition.

3 Tips to Engage Millennials and Grow Your Business! | Curtis Battles

{3:45 minutes to read} I recently attended a seminar about understanding, targeting and reaching the millennial generation. The presentation revolved around the question: Do you know how to market your business to attract millennial consumers? There are 80 million millennials in the U.S. and collectively this age group (those born between 1980-2000) have 200 billion dollars of annual buying power. By 2020, they’re expected to exceed 1.4 trillion dollars of annual buying power or 30% of all retail sales. They also make up 37% of the American workforce. Here are some statistics for you to consider:

Learn How to Set & Achieve Goals with Mind Mapping! | Curtis Battles

{3:45 minutes to read} After having completed some great assignments this past year, I’ve been thinking it may be time to once again reinvent myself. I’ve become more of a general strategic consultant for a number of different businesses, including smaller tech companies, craft brewery start-ups, as well as for complex projects such as Grand Central Terminal and the World Trade Center. So I’ve begun reflecting on my life a lot lately: What is my purpose?

Who Will Be the Hero That Saves the SS United States? | Curtis Battles

{4:45 minutes to read} The SS United States, a majestic and historic vessel, carried presidents and heads of state during her active duty. At over 1,000 feet long, she is longer than the Intrepid aircraft carrier and set the speed record, called the Blue Riband, between the United States and Europe in 1952. She was originally built to carry 10,000 men over ten thousand miles. With the advent of accessible air travel in the late 60s, however, long distance sailing became obsolete and the SS United States was retired.

{4:10 minutes to read} In my business, I spend a lot of time attending various networking events. Sometimes the gatherings are casual and relaxed with the goal of being able to introduce yourself in an engaging way so that the person you’re meeting will continue chatting with you. Other times, it’s more formal interactions; this is the case for one networking group I belong to called Gotham Networking, where the philosophy is “it’s better to give than to receive and what goes around comes around.”

{3:10 minutes to read} Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is the blending of a residential and/or commercial area designed to maximize access to public transportation, essentially a self-contained lifestyle center. These communities frequently include elements and features such as restaurants, shopping, apartments, and offices, which enhance and encourage that mode of transportation. TODs are typically located within one-quarter to one-half a mile from a transit stop.

{3:48 minutes to read} Historic Union Station in Washington, D.C., which opened in 1908, is a classic Beaux-Arts building designed by famed architect Daniel Burnham. Since the peak of its demand during the mid-20th century, the station has undergone significant restoration, transforming it into the commercial success it is today. Located in the hub of our nation’s capital, it’s no surprise that it is the second-busiest station (after Penn Station) in the Amtrak system. This transportation hub also offers regional commuter rail lines –

Roads vs. Rails: Which is the better investment | Curtis Battles

{3:50 minutes to read} Across the country, many states are facing an epidemic: the basic infrastructure is aging rapidly. Bridges, highways, and railroads often need to be replaced or undergo major repairs. This challenge is here to stay until it’s resolved across the country. It’s a hot topic for debate, especially in large metropolitan areas. In Connecticut, Governor Malloy has recently created a 5 year transportation vision plan to help guide this discussion. He is trying to balance the needs of drivers, as well as public transportation commuters.

For these parents and students, there’s an array of charter schools and unique programs available. For over 15 years, I have been involved with Domus Kids, a non-profit organization that serves disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Connecticut. The Domus’ vision is that “no child shall be denied hope, love or a fair chance in life.”

The Booming Market of Elder Care | Curtis Battles

{Time to read: 2:25 minutes} Over the last month, I've been having conversations with a colleague who acquired a home care assistant franchise in the lower Fairfield County area. With the population aging, baby boomers are becoming elder boomers. Many of them have disposable income and want to make sure they can stay in their homes. Senior care is one of these fastest growing market segments because the population is aging so quickly. There are two primary dynamics involved:

How to keep your organization attractive to younger generations in the 21st century | Curtis Battles

Today, many Congregations, Synagogues and Mosques are seeing a decline in their membership and active participation. This is mainly due to changing demographics where the core membership is aging and attendance is down.A challenge for any denomination is determining how to attract younger members from Gen X and Gen Y to reinvigorate their community. Often these institutions suffer financially as well, as it’s sometimes difficult for people to tithe or make consistent donations due to economic circumstances.

Leaders must have the confidence to continue growing and learning if they want their team to follow suit. This was just one of the lessons I took away from a leadership development seminar I attended recently called L2 (Learn, Lead). This seminar was sponsored by leadership guru John Maxwell, who has a new book called Good Leaders Ask Great Questions. It’s about people in senior roles asking great questions to obtain the most information they can, in order to effectively lead their team.

Preparing Generation Z For Life: Improving the college experience!

Recently, I came across a New York Times article which revealed that kids graduate from college and often remark “I don’t know what I want to do…for my first job…or career”.  Even though parents spend massive amounts of time, energy and money putting them on the right path. Over the past few decades, the U.S. population has gone through numerous employment changes as each generation (Baby Boomers, Gen X, etc.) has hit their career-peak. It is clear that unlike the Baby Boomers, the Millennials and Generation Z have a larger selection of unique opportunities available.  However, in this competitive market, the younger generations have harder decisions to make.
